The data model is the site map
Get the entities right and the URL structure, the internal links and the sitemap all fall out of the same model rather than being maintained by hand.
Content architecture / SEO · Coaster Source
Not every SEO win is a location page. Coaster Source ranks because the catalogue itself is the content: every park and every ride is a page people were already searching for.
Enthusiast information was scattered across forums and fan pages. The demand existed and the structure did not, which is the easiest kind of search opportunity to win and the hardest to fake.
Model the domain properly, then let the catalogue generate the pages. Parks, rides and their attributes each became an addressable page with real data behind it, cross-linked so a visitor who lands on one ride can reach every related one.
How it was run
Get the entities right and the URL structure, the internal links and the sitemap all fall out of the same model rather than being maintained by hand.
A complete, accurate catalogue outranks a blog on the same subject, because it answers the specific question rather than writing around it.
Traffic at this scale punishes a slow page. The build was sized for the catalogue it would eventually hold, not the one it launched with.
